This week, we take a look at three more of our medicinal plants of the boreal north. All three of these plants can be found throughout our forests, but an especially lovely place to enjoy them is along the shores of Lake Superior. These plants (and a lichen!) are a wonderful reminder of the variety and beauty of our boreal forests.

Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Flag Raising on Isle Royale in pictures

On Wednesday, June 12, 2024, the flag of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa was flown high for the first time in Rock Harbor to an Honor Song and Flag Song sung by the Stone Bridge Singers (traditional Anishinaabe drum group from Grand Portage). The Gichi Onigaming flag was raised by Grand Portage Band member and Vietnam veteran, Duane ‘Butch’ Deschampe.

GM Art Colony and Care Partners teaming up to offer free workshops for caregivers working with people suffering from memory loss

Memory Cafe is an established and ongoing Care Partners program, a casual once-a-month gathering for people experiencing dementia and the family and friends who care for them. Participants are invited to engage using hands-on artistic processes to create a unique project that will serve as a symbolic momento honoring the shared experience.

Cook County Historical Society will celebrate its centennial birthday in 2025!

The Cook County Historical Society (CCHS) was established in the fall of 1925 and is a countyand member-supported organization dedicated to the preservation and dissemination of the county’s storied past. In its early days, the historical society stored its initial collections in scattered locations (including the old leaky jail), managed a smattering of records, and relied on a shifting volunteer base.

Third Annual Lutsong Music Festival

Lutsong Productions, LLC is pleased to announce its third annual event, the Lutsong Music Festival, to be held in Lutsen, Minn. on Thursday, July 18 through Sunday, July 21 with 18 acts scheduled to play non-stop music at Caribou Highlands Lodge and the North Shore Winery located on Ski Hill Road in Lutsen. In addition to great music, attendees will enjoy the vendor village, a bronze metal pour, nightly campfires, a NEW foraging activity, food, and beverages.

Down Memory Lane

10 YEARS AGO JULY 12, 2014 * The Cook County/Grand Marais Development Authority (EDA) listened to presentations by Jeff Corey of One Roof Community Housing and Rick Klun of /Center City Housing Corp at the Tuesday, July 8 board meeting. Both organizations are non-profits that develop and operate a variety of housing options in the Greater Duluth area.
