This week, we take a look at three more of our medicinal plants of the boreal north. All three of these plants can be found throughout our forests, but an especially lovely place to enjoy them is along the shores of Lake Superior. These plants (and a lichen!) are a wonderful reminder of the variety and beauty of our boreal forests.
Mountain Bike Meeting time and date moved The Cook County Youth Mountain Bike team student/ parent informational meeting has been moved to July 18th at 5:00 p.m. at North Point which is located at 17 1st Avenue West, Grand Marais. One week later, same time, same place.
On Wednesday, June 12, 2024, the flag of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa was flown high for the first time in Rock Harbor to an Honor Song and Flag Song sung by the Stone Bridge Singers (traditional Anishinaabe drum group from Grand Portage). The Gichi Onigaming flag was raised by Grand Portage Band member and Vietnam veteran, Duane ‘Butch’ Deschampe.
Memory Cafe is an established and ongoing Care Partners program, a casual once-a-month gathering for people experiencing dementia and the family and friends who care for them. Participants are invited to engage using hands-on artistic processes to create a unique project that will serve as a symbolic momento honoring the shared experience.
The Cook County Historical Society (CCHS) was established in the fall of 1925 and is a countyand member-supported organization dedicated to the preservation and dissemination of the county’s storied past. In its early days, the historical society stored its initial collections in scattered locations (including the old leaky jail), managed a smattering of records, and relied on a shifting volunteer base.
The Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe shares more boundary with the federally managed National Forest System than any other Tribe in the United States, with 75% of the reservation border adjoining the Chippewa National Forest in northern Minnesota. Being in the North Woods, timber harvesting and forest management are important to the Tribe’s economy.

10 YEARS AGO JULY 12, 2014 * The Cook County/Grand Marais Development Authority (EDA) listened to presentations by Jeff Corey of One Roof Community Housing and Rick Klun of /Center City Housing Corp at the Tuesday, July 8 board meeting. Both organizations are non-profits that develop and operate a variety of housing options in the Greater Duluth area.
