We keep making tech smarter, but how smart is it really? More and more people are using plant identification apps, but this week I want to offer a word of caution – or, rather, a way in which to use these apps as a tool along the way, but not the word of God.

Are you Adulting?

Some people say that they hate weeding. I'm all right with hating weeding. Some people come out and say they hate it, but then, when the quackgrass is up in the potatoes, when the vetch is climbing the roses, when the lamb's-quarters are in the tomatoes, the dandelions are in the strawberries, the plantain in the peppers, wild chamomile in the marigolds, that's when some of those same people are in there weeding. On their hands and knees. Sweating, stinging. Humming and whistling.

North Shore Land Company receives a large tax refund from the county

Cook County Assessor Bob Thompson presented a resolution to the board regarding the ongoing tax court petition with the North Shore Land Company (Lutsen Resort) for taxes payable in 2023. The resolution, which was accepted, stipulates that Cook County will refund $54,412 plus a calculated interest of less than eight months to the North Shore Land Company, marking the successful conclusion of this legal matter.

Commissioners set timeline for Public Hearings to discuss a Cannabis Ordinance

Commissioners approved setting a public hearing to consider the Cook County ordinance 66: An Ordinance to Regulate Cannabis Business and Underage Cannabis Possession on August 6 in the commissioners room at 1 p.m. and August 12 in Grand Marais from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts (ACA) (this is dependent upon the ACA being available) and August 13, at the commissioner’s regular meeting at 8:30 a.m., where the board may vote on the ordinance if it feels ready. Through that week, commissioners will accept online comments or emails from the public via a dedicated platform that they can use to help set the ordinance.

The 12th annual Water Festival draws friendly crowds

Grand Marais Harbor was a vibrant scene last weekend, as the 12th annual North Shore Water Festival, hosted by Stone Harbor Wilderness Supply, drew a diverse crowd of water sports enthusiasts. Despite the occasional thunder and rain on Saturday, the event was a success, attracting a good turnout of people eager to try their hand at kayaking, paddle boarding, and canoeing.
