Superior National Forest Updated Public Office Hours

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service announced that three of the six Superior National Forest offices will shift ‘open to the public’ office hours during the times listed below: Gunflint District Ranger Office (Grand Marias, MN) and Tofte District Ranger Office (Tofte, MN)starting Monday, August 12 will be closed on Monday & Tuesdays, the remaining 5-days (Wednesday – Sunday) both Tofte and Gunflint will continue to be open 08001630.

Smoke from Canadian fires affects local air quality

If your eyes were burning the evening of Tuesday, August 13, you weren't alone. Smoke from Canadian wildfires continues to come from Canada and some U.S. wildfires, saturating the Great Lakes region. The National Weather Service, with its diligent tracking, informs us that much of the smoke is coming from wildfires burning in northern Alberta and Saskatchewan. Folks living near Jasper National Park in Alberta are under evacuation due to the wildfire there, and the Sooke Potholes Park wildfire in British Columbia is also burning out of control.

Homeowners with Flood Damaged Property: FEMA Damage Inspectors Now in Cook County

FEMA Property Damage Inspectors are currently in Cook County. Homeowners with damaged property from the June flood event need to apply now for direct funding. To apply for FEMA disaster assistance, you can go online at DisasterAssistance.gov, download the FEMA App for mobile devices, or call toll-free 800-621-3362. If you use a relay service, such as video relay (VRS), captioned telephone or other service, give FEMA the number for that service.

When disasters are declared, the SBA provides low-interest loans to homeowners, renters, businesses and nonprofit organizations to help fund repairs that aren’t covered by insurance or other sources like FEMA grants. ANYONE affected by these storms should also register with SBA at sba.gov/disaster and apply for a disaster loan to help with unmet needs.
