September 2024

Wellness

September is here and with it the chilly air! Although we still have plenty of warm beautiful days ahead, the cooler nights and changing leaves hint of the seasons to come. This also means a transition in the foods and drinks we are putting in our bodies. A time of year for warming spices to boost the spirit and the body, Fire Cider is a wonderful addition to your autumn beverages.

Historic Cook County announces public art project Biota Borealis unveiling

Historic Cook County is excited to announce a date for its Public Art Project Unveiling and corresponding Artist Talk with Maeve Gathje. Join us on Saturday, September 28th at 4 pm at the Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery (115 W Wisconsin St, Grand Marais, MN) to be among the first to see this incredible work of art. Historic Cook County has been working with Gathje since November 2023 to bring this project to life, and we are delighted to be celebrating her hard work. The Public Art, titled Biota Borealis, consists of three sand-blasted Minnesota granite stones displaying scenes of Northern Minnesota beauty. Some inspiration for the piece came from a public survey, where community members provided feedback on topics, things, and ideas that define the area. Gathje also found inspiration in selecting the rocks herself and drawing from her time spent in the area. The Celebration will begin with an Artist’s Talk, where Gathje will share photos and stories about her process of designing and working with the stones. Following a brief Q&A session, we will transition outside for the Grand Unveiling.

PHHS Expands Access to Free Harm Reduction Supplies

Cook County Public HealthandHumanServices (PHHS) announces an update to our affiliation with the Steve Rummler Hope Network as an official Naloxone Access Point. The Steve Rummler Hope Network’s mission is to “heighten awareness of the opioid crisis, address its impact on the physical and emotion burdens of addiction and chronic pain, and improve the associated care process.” For more information on Naloxone Access Points, visit: Naloxone Access Point Program Steve Rummler HOPE Network. Through this collaboration, PHHS provides harm reduction supplies at no cost to the community in all four bathrooms at the Cook County Courthouse in an effort to maintain greater confidentiality of persons accessing the supplies. The cabinets will regularly supply Naloxone and/or Narcan to reverse overdose and condoms. Other public health supplies will be stocked as funding is available, such as emergency contraceptive, and pregnancy tests. These supplies are available through funding from the HRSA Rural Communities Opioid Response Program and through the use of Cook County’s Opioid Settlement Funds, and the Steve Rummler Hope Network.

Dedication is held for the long-awaited Icelandic Fen Scientific Area

Good things happen to those who wait. And wait… On Saturday, September 7, John Craddock, Poplar Lake, and about 100 others attended the Icelandite-fen Scientific and Natural Area (SNA) dedication at Mile Post 121 along Highway 61. John Green (Geology professor emeritus, UM-Duluth) spoke about the rock and flora-fen and the 26 years it took the MDOT folks to agree to move an easement for the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) who, with the help from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative and Reinvest in Minnesota, acquired the 25 acres and dedicated as the new Icelandic Coastal Scientific and Natural Area.

Letters to the Editor

I just turned 75, I am old enough to remember the debates between John Kennedy and Richard Nixon. I have voted in 12 presidential elections, and, this coming one will make 13. In the past I have voted for Republicans and Democrats, and, that goes for senate, house, and, gubernatorial elections as well. This year my choice is clear. I will be voting for Harris and Walz.
