Cross-country runners take on the North Shore Challenge
Thursday, August 29, was a great day for running on the Pincushion Trails. The temperatures were cool, the sky was overcast, and there was a nice breeze. Eight high school boys' and girls' cross country teams gathered to compete against each other.

Special fishing regulations open house meeting scheduled for September 20
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will hold an open house to collect public comments and share information on the existing experimental walleye regulations for Saganaga, Seagull, and Gull Lakes in Cook County, Minnesota. The experimental walleye regulations set in 2015 aimed to protect smaller walleye to help increase the walleye populations in these lakes.

Demonstrators for Trump/Harris
Last Friday at 5 p.m. there were two groups of people each demonstrating along Highway 61 in Grand Marais on behalf of their candidate for President and Vice President. The group closet to Java Moose was for Harris/Walz while the other group, about 300 feet away along the harbor wall held signs for their candidates of choice, Trump/Vance. While the protesters were civil, there was some ugly comments from passerbys on bicycles to the Trump supporters that was unwarranted. In the past similar insults and hazing has happened to the Harris/Walz supporters.

BEYOND REASON
For Whom the Bike Bell Tolls On a late summer day, on a rural country road, I was leisurely riding a borrowed bike. It was a glorious day, warm sun, fluffy clouds.

Outdoors with James Egan
For the want of a new pair of glasses there goes the boat I've been wearing glasses for about 35 years. Initially I didn't need to wear glasses – you know, for driver's license or driving - just mainly to see ducks in the fall at 60 yards and 200 yards and a quarter mile.

Pieces of Me
I love to write. I have a lot to say, or at least I think I do. I wish I had paid more attention in Mrs. Hansen’s English class back at good ol’ CCHS so I can write properly today. I remember back in grade school having to do SRAs for English class. Danny Renn, Misty Johnson and I kicked butt getting those stacks of SRAs whipped out. I remember us being so far ahead of most of our classmates that we didn’t have to do a few levels of them. Maybe if I had, I would know where punctuation goes today?

Wellness
Autumn Self-Care Turning the calendar into September, the smell of autumn is in the air, crisp nights have returned, and the leaves are beginning to glow with color. With the transition into autumn, however, we must tend to the body to ensure we weather this transition in a healthy manner.

Community Column a great addition to downtown Grand Marais
The “Community Column” was recently installed in downtown Grand Marais. The public sculpture, by Lutsen artist Greg Mueller, has been a year-long project. In 2023 Mueller was awarded a Minnesota State Arts Board Grant to create a public art work that included a community engagement component. With the support of the Grand Marais Art Colony, Mueller held (3) workshops at “Studio 21” inviting Cook County High School, GES School and Cook County community members to participate in creating the sculpture’s content.
