In a game that saw the Cook County fans cheering loudly, the Cook County girls put in a tremendous effort. They had one last chance to tie the score against Carlton/ Wrenshall, but a three-point attempt clanked off the rim at the buzzer, and the Vikings fell 49-46 in a nail-biter played December 10 at home.
The annual winter musical was held at Birch Grove Community School on Wednesday, December 11 with an afternoon and evening performance, as has been the long-standing tradition at Birch Grove. The Saplings (ages 3-5) warmed up each show with a few songs featuring red glowing noses, jingle bells, snowflakes, and tails ~ very cute performances both. K-5 performed the main musical feature, The Share Bears, A Storybook Fantasy for Young Voices, by Teresa Jennings. These elementary students sang their hearts out and it was well-received by both audiences with abundant applause and smiles!
Bucky came to AAR last June as an abandoned 14 week old beagle puppy suffering from a swollen abdomen. His problem was initially thought to be a liver shunt but a trip to Blue Pearl Vets in Arden Hills where he had a CT scan showed a hepatic arterial venous malformation which is a knot of arteries and veins in his liver. Because of this problem, his liver is very small and as he grows, his liver will not be able to keep up metabolizing wastes in his system, which causes fluid to build up in his abdomen. Since June, heâs been eating special food, getting various medications and getting fluid drained from his abdomen (abdominocentesis) every 3-5 weeks.

The Minnesota Counties Intergovernmental Trust Board Chair announced the MCIT County of the Year recipient last week at their annual meeting in Bloomington, Minnesota. That annual meeting is held each year in conjunction with the Association of Minnesota Counties Annual Conference. MCIT is a risk-sharing pool dedicated to providing coverage and risk management services for its members, all of Minnesota's 87 counties and associated public entities. MCIT is a joint powers entity established in 1979 pursuant to Minnesota Statutes 471.59 and 471.981.
Trinity Lutheran Church in Hovland (4957 East Hwy 61, Hovland) is having a 5 p.m. Christmas Eve worship service. There will be no potluck this year.
We had a good day of birding; the temperatures were almost above freezing, and the wind was not too terrible. No snow or rain made it easier to see and be out looking around. We had generally decent numbers for all species with the conditions. Looking at the results, we all did well, considering the winter blast right before the count probably moved the last of the stragglers out and moved in some more of our winter regulars.

Although the Cook County News-Herald knows that the majority of sportsmen and women are law-abiding folks, there are a few that run afoul of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Officers. Periodically, the DNR provides a report of some of the miscreants the Conservation Officers (CO) have encountered. The News-Herald shares these stories as a reminder to all to be safe and to follow the rules!
