The Vikings, united in front of their fans, secured their second victory of the season against Fond du Lac Ojibwe Ognichida on Wednesday, Feb. 26.

Erin Aili wins the 2025 John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon
Not long after the thrilling finish, when Erin Aili crossed the finish line about ten very scant minutes in front of another Erin, Erin Altemus of Grand Marais, she wanted to make it known that she had tied her husband, Keith Aili, for wins in the John Beargrease sled dog marathon.
Matters of Record
The Cook County News-Herald publishes Matters of Record to inform the public of arraignments and dispositions of criminal cases in which the punishment exceeds $125 and/or ten days in jail and/or includes one year of supervised adult probation. It is the Cook County NewsHerald’s policy that this information contains a complete record. Requests for items to be withheld will not be granted.
Conservation Officer Tales
Although the Cook County News-Herald knows that the majority of sportsmen and women are law-abiding folks, there are a few that run afoul of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Officers. Periodically, the DNR provides a report of some of the miscreants the Conservation Officers (CO) have encountered. The News-Herald shares these stories as a reminder to all to be safe and to follow the rules!

BEYOND REASON
It’s been cold. An engaged audience might ask: How cold was it? A type of punchline: It was so cold the ice was complaining about the temperature! The reality is more mundane. It was so cold they cancelled school. This has happened before. I grew up in Texas, a geography not known for cold temperatures. One winter day was so cold that they cancelled schools. They were concerned the HVAC wasn’t up to the job. No school administrator wants to take in warm bodied children and spit them out blue. It was 29 degrees Fahrenheit.

Wellness
In northern Minnesota, spring doesn’t truly arrive until May. Nevertheless I begin to feel excitement building in March for the warm months, flowers, and greenery ahead. The Dogwood contrasts a bright red against the white snow and brown earth. The Birch and Poplars begin to brighten their branch tips with light greens and yellows. These subtle shifts are difficult to notice immediately, but at some point the eyes catch the shift and you are left with hope for spring and awe at the process of the awakening of the earth.
