Marcia Jean Latz, age 73, longtime resident of Rochester, MN and formerly of Grand Marais, MN passed away on March 7th, 2025, at Mayo Clinic Hospital, St Mary’s Campus from complications of Type 1 diabetes. Marcia was born on November 22, 1951, in Grand Rapids, MN to Leon and Betty (Dowd) Latz. She graduated from Mayo High School in Rochester in 1970 and then earned a degree in English from the University of Minnesota. She moved to New York City to pursue a career in publishing before returning to Rochester.
Jacquelin Stern MacDonald passed away March 5, 2025 at Brethren Hillcrest Homes in LaVerne, California. Jackie was born on September 16, 1935 in Glendale, California to Theron and Virginia (Reed) Clapp. She was the oldest of four sisters. In 1957 she married Vernon W. Stern, raising three children, Dale, Diane, and Doug. Jackie frequently said how much she enjoyed hiking and camping in the mountains east of her home in Los Angeles with her husband Vern and her kids. She was a bilingual kindergarten teacher in Ontario, California, and particularly enjoyed teaching Spanish speaking children, many of whom were immigrants. Her husband Vern sadly passed away in 1991.

March 5 saw the completion of the second year of a successful four-week swimming- and-story-crafting program at Oshki Ogimaag Charter School in Grand Portage. The program is a three-way collaboration between Oshki Ogimaag, the Cook County YMCA, and Minnesota Children’s Press of Grand Marais.
