The SAVE Act is actually a voter suppression bill which recently passed in the US House and is currently in committee in the Senate. The GOP backed SAVE Act would not even authorize federal funding for the new and significant challenges it presents to states to administer it, and it has no phase-in period. Pete Stauber, MN CD-08 Representative to the US House was one of the sponsors for this bill.
Going to Bartalina: Songs & Stories of Commercial Sailing on the Great Lakes with Folksinger Charlie Maguire
The Grand Marais Public Library is pleased to host “Going to Bartalina: Songs & Stories of Commercial Sailing on the Great Lakes,” a folk concert by COMPAS songwriter and performer Charlie Maguire. This free show will take place on Wednesday, May 21, from 6-7 p.m.
DNR urges people to leave deer fawns alone
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources asks that people avoid disturbing or touching deer fawns, which are born around this time of year.

Can Cook County protect Federal land?
County Commissioners are considering if the County can fund service and protection for the Fed owned roads, culverts and land (about 363,000 acres). Needed is an adequate Fed payment n Lieu of Taxes (PILT). $1.3 million Fed PILT was paid n 2024.
Canoeist drowns in BWCA
On Saturday, May 10, a forest service worker found a canoeist dead not far from his capsized canoe on Iron Lake, in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). Robert Sydney James, 62, of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, was found drowned in Iron Lake, and believed to be on a solo canoe trip when his body and some gear was found. He was wearing a life jacket.
