Hovland Transfer Station Open House Aug. 11
Cook County and North Shore Waste are excited to announce the completion of the transfer station located in Hovland. We plan to open for business on Monday August 11th. Prior to our opening day we'd like to invite you and other members of the public to view and celebrate this wonderful community asset.
Highway 61 in Hovland will be temporarily closed
The Minnesota Department of Transportation closed Highway 61 on August 6, and the road will remain closed for up to 12 days for a culvert replacement project. Motorists will be rerouted to County Road 16, the Arrowhead Trail, and County Road 69, also known as the North Road, during the construction project.

The 2025 Gunflint Trial Canoe Races raised significant funds for the Gunflint Trail Fire Department
Once again, the annual Gunflint Trail Canoe Races, a testament to the Gunflint Trails community's spirit and unity, were held at the Gunflint Lodge harbor on the south shore. This year, the event collectively raised more than $20,000 for the Gunflint Trail Fire Department, a remarkable achievement.
YMCA Asks for Community Input
The Duluth Area Family YMCA and Superior Douglas County Family YMCA are embarking on a new journey and coming together. During this process, they are asking the community to complete a short survey with the goal of gaining insight, allowing them to continue to inspire, strengthen, and connect the members within their communities.

Rec Park July numbers down, revenue strong for the year
At the August 5 park board meeting, Grand Marais Parks and Rec Director Dave Tersteeg reported that despite mixed weather, with considerable rain at times, the park's revenue remained strong. He noted that the July monthly revenue was practically even compared to 2024, despite a 5 percent rate increase yearto- date, which he considered a dip in occupancy.

Stars of the North Music Festival hits all of the right notes
In its tenth year, hosted by the Grand Marais Music Collaborative (GMMC), nine musical acts performed for free in the Grand Marais Harbor Park on Saturday, July 26, and Sunday, July 27, attracting crowds of music enthusiasts.
