Do you like Candy? Of course you do. Candy is a loveable, playful, friendly, spicy gal of 11-12 weeks old. She was found in a wet ditch by a parking lot being bombarded by red wing blackbirds. Her foster family is really enjoying this little gal! She is up to date on her vaccinations, microchipped and wormed. She is NOT spayed yet but the adopter will get a $100 spay voucher to use at their vet and the adoption will be official after that. Adoption fee is $175 plus tax. Grand Marais Door-to-Door Water Pipe Inspections

The City of Grand Marais is working with an engineering company to complete a water service line inventory that involves inspections at homes and businesses in town. Staff from AE2S will begin knocking on doors in Grand Marais the week of August 25 and will continue through the end of September.

The Story of Two Paintings: Unveiling the Mystery of local artist Anna Johnson’s “Woman with Sticks”

The Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery recently received an original painting by local artist Anna C. Johnson titled “Woman Hauling Sticks.” This donation, from the Johnson Trust with Leslie Carter as the previous owner, is notable not only for its artistic merit but also for its role in concluding a bigger story featuring a slightly different painting of the same name.

Vehicle Theft from Local Auto Repair Business

In the early morning hours of August 14, 2025, three vehicles were stolen from a local repair business in Grand Marais. Two of the vehicles were taken for rides and then abandoned, while one of the vehicles was still missing. The vehicle was described as a 2014 Blue Subaru Legacy with a Minnesota license plate number - JRB837. On August 18, the Subaru was returned to Tire & Auto. The incident is currently under investigation.

Conservation Officer Tales

Although the Cook County News-Herald knows that the majority of sportsmen and women are law-abiding folks, there are a few that run afoul of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Officers. Periodically, the DNR provides a report of some of the miscreants the Conservation Officers (CO) have encountered. The News-Herald shares these stories as a reminder to all to be safe and to follow the rules!
