My relationship with a broom usually goes like this: I see many somethings on the floor I dislike; I go get a broom; I use that broom to sweep up those dislikable many somethings; I realize I should have brought a dustpan to the party; I hunt for that dustpan because no one ever puts it away; I finally locate said dustpan in an inexplicable place (the garage?!); I sweep up the dislikable debris; I return the broom to whence it lives; walking out the door I realize I forgot to put the dustpan away and promise to put it away later; then I don’t think about a broom until the next time I see terribleness on the floor. But the other day I had a broom and was sweeping leaves and sticks off our front steps.

The Cook County Coalition of Lake Association (CCCoLA) recently celebrated its 30th Anniversary as a citizen organization dedicated to protecting and preserving the Waters and Shorelands of Cook County. CCCo-LA was officially chartered in 1994 with the stated purpose of “the preservation and enhancement of the quality of life on and adjacent to the lakes, rivers, and streams of Cook County, the promotion of a sense of community, the education of its members and others on issues of concern to lake shore property owners, the monitoring of water quality and management, and reporting of observations and findings to its members and other interested persons.” Recognizing that healthy lakes and shorelands have a direct relationship to property values, shoreland residents have both an interest in and responsibility for actively engaging in lake and shoreland stewardship work.
