Football team falls to MIB

The Vikings had a huge task ahead of them as they traveled to open their season against the 2023 state nineman champion Mountain Iron-Buhl (MI-B) squad. The Vikings opened their season at perennially powerhouse Mountain Iron-Buhl Rangers on Thursday, August 29 and lost 42-6 to the defending Minnesota State nine man champions.

At the End of the Caribou, a book review

Jocelyn Bowman Thornton, the niece of Cap and Billie Peterson, has written a captivating story about the couple's life in her book, At the End of the Caribou. The book, published by the Cook County Historical Society, is filled with pictures taken by the couple as they slowly built their lives in the northland on Tait Lake.

Recreation Park revenue is up

Grand Marais Recreation Park Director Dave Tersteeg reports that the August 2024 park revenue outpaced August 2023 revenue by 1.8 percent. That increase pushed the overall year-to-date total to a 1.3 percent gain over 2023.

Special fishing regulations open house meeting scheduled for September 20

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will hold an open house to collect public comments and share information on the existing experimental walleye regulations for Saganaga, Seagull, and Gull Lakes in Cook County, Minnesota. The experimental walleye regulations set in 2015 aimed to protect smaller walleye to help increase the walleye populations in these lakes.
