Grand Marais Planning Commission grants two variances

BRIAN LARSEN On Thursday, April 4, The Grand Marais Planning Commission granted the Jane Penner variance request and preliminary plat application, clearing one large hurdle for Jane Penner to build 12 homes on a two-acre lot in Grand Marais, not far from Humphrey Circle. Penner has hired a local contractor who will hire and train young carpenters to build the homes, which she intends to sell at cost.

Volunteers needed for North Shore Health Care fundraiser

Volunteers are needed for the North Shore Health Care Foundation’s 4TH Annual Taste of the Trail Picnic Adventure on Sunday, June 23, 2024. This event helps support equitable access to health care, healthy living programs and emergency services in Cook County and helps us develop programs where gaps in health services exist in our rural neck of the woods. Slurping I’m sitting here in not so hot Phoenix, Arizona waiting for inspiration on the headline for our March North Shore Living newspaper article. I can hear my friend in the other room slurping on her hot tea while working remote from her bedroom office.

Meet Kyla Gallegos

Kyla Gallegos is the daughter of Amber and Neil Pederson of Grand Marais. During school, Kyla participated in Envirothon, Track and Field (she was Captain), the National Honor Society, and Soccer (she was not at CCHS but at a previous high school in the cities).

Matters of Record

Conservation Officer Tales

Although the Cook County News-Herald knows that the majority of sportsmen and women are law-abiding folks, there are a few that run afoul of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Officers. Periodically, the DNR provides a report of some of the miscreants the Conservation Officers (CO) have encountered. The News-Herald shares these stories as a reminder to all to be safe and to follow the rules!

Film Special at the Library

The Library partners with the Violence Prevention Center in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The Grand Marais Public Library is partnering with the Violence Prevention Center to screen the film Women Talking on Friday, April 19, from 6:00-8:30 p.m.
