Vikings do well in their first track meet of the season

The Polar League indoor meet was held on March 22 at the University of Wisconsin Superior (UWS) indoor track, and Cook County boys and girls had a very good first meet. Vikings Head Boys’ and Girls’ Track Coach April Wahlstrom said, “The first meet was awesome!” This year's CCHS squad might be the biggest ever, with about 30 girls and 50 boys participating in track and field.

32nd Annual Cook County Emergency Services Conference For three decades Cook County Emergency Management has brought forth an Emergency Services Conference and this year will be no different. The 32nd offering of the Emergency Services Conference will be held in Grand Marais on April 19 and 20, 2024.

Free NSFC Woods Walk Advisory Program for North Shore Landowners

Landowners near the Lake Superior shoreline have the opportunity to learn more about the forest ecosystems on their own property through the new Woods Walk Advisory Program as part of the North Shore Forest Collaborative’s (NSFC) effort to reforest the North Shore. Trained advisors will spend about an hour walking with landowners on their property free of charge and answering questions about native plant communities, invasive species and management, and specific resources available to them. Maggie Smith Awarded a Bob Pratt Skills, Trades, & Technology Scholarship

Maggie Smith, a Senior at Cook County High School, was the most recent recipient of the Bob Pratt Skills, Trades, & Technology Scholarship. After graduation, Maggie plans to work in Cook County as a phlebotomist. The Pratt Scholarship helped fund two phlebotomy courses at Lake Superior College. In Maggie’s words: “Receiving the Bob Pratt Scholarship has been a tremendous blessing both financially and educationally. The financial support has relieved a significant burden, allowing me to focus on my phlebotomy program without the constant worry of how to afford tuition and other expenses. On the educational front, the scholarship has opened up opportunities for me to pursue internships, attend workshops, and participate in extracurricular activities that have enriched my learning experience and helped me build a stronger foundation for my future career prospects. Overall, the Bob Pratt Scholarship has been an absolute game-changer for me, providing not only financial stability but also enhancing my overall academic journey. St. Luke’s Co-President Eric Lohn to retire, Dr. Nick Van Deelen and Chris Johnson to be promoted

Eric Lohn, Co-President & CFO of St. Luke’s, has announced he will be retiring on April 12. With Lohn’s retirement, fellow Co-President Nicholas Van Deelen, MD, will be promoted to the role of sole President of St. Luke’s and of Aspirus Health’s Minnesota Region. Current VP of Strategy & Finance Chris Johnson will be promoted to Interim Chief Operating Officer. Dr. Van Deelen and Johnson will begin their new roles on April 15.

Because Pastor Enno is gone that day, I will be doing the sermon at First Congregational Church, UCC, on April 14th next; and I am mildly terrified. My last attempt to preach was a mostly easy talk about the importance of law to protect children. Before that I last tried to preach in 1964. Talk about unused muscles!
