THE HUB: Not just for Seniors

For several months now, I have attended a writing group called Leave a Legacy. Organizers are home-grown Larry Dean and transplant (and former owner of this newspaper), Steve Fernlund. I am moved to write about it because I met really interesting people in the group. Also, I am invigorated by the range and depth of services provided at our meeting place, The Hub.

South of the Border Café changes hands

On Monday, June 30, at 2 p.m. Wendy Ford’s last day of owning the South of the Border Café (SOB) ended and Mark Johnson (L) and Eugene Eliasen became owners of the popular breakfast and lunch café located located in downtown Grand Marais along Highway 61.

Matters of Record

William Ralph Dupont, 67, Eden Prairie, Minnesota, was cited for driving 73 mph in a 60 mph speed zone, and he was fined $135.00.

More results from Grandma’s Marathon

Brea Boomer, a local resident from Grand Portage, was among the finishers of the Garry Bjorklund half marathon held in Duluth on June 21. At 32, she completed the 13.1-mile race in 1:59:12, maintaining a 9:06-mile pace. Her impressive performance placed her at 2,373 out of 8,249 finishers and 973 out of 4,917 women runners.

Conservation Officer Tales

Although the Cook County News-Herald knows that the majority of sportsmen and women are law-abiding folks, there are a few that run afoul of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Officers. Periodically, the DNR provides a report of some of the miscreants the Conservation Officers (CO) have encountered. The News-Herald shares these stories as a reminder to all to be safe and to follow the rules!
