Down Memory Lane

20 YEARS AGO NOVEMBER 14, 2003 v Great Expectations Charter School opened its doors on Tuesday, the first day back from a scheduled break for the 44 students who attend the newly-formed school. The new building, which is on the corner of the new Gunflint Trail and Fifth Street, features a large common area, four light and airy classrooms, one of which will be used as a library, and a kitchen and administrative offices.

November is Native American Heritage Month

November is Native American Heritage Month. There are four tribal nations located within Iron Range Resources & Rehabilitation’s service area: Bois Forte, Fond du Lac, Grand Portage and Leech Lake. All are separate, sovereign nations whose people have lived in northeastern Minnesota for centuries. Each has an independent relationship with the United States and the state of Minnesota.

Na Na November

October went by in a blink. November is now a time to turn on the furnace, light some candles, and bake some warm bread in the oven. I love it when the house smells of cinnamon, spice, and everything nice. I did a variation on banana bread this year by adding pumpkin and extra spices to the recipe. I don’t know if I will return to my traditional banana bread recipe anytime soon. The nutmeg warmed not only the aroma of the bread, but I could feel it warming up my throat like a hug from the inside.

We were matriculated to the big, old high school for 9th grade, and our first 9th grade football game was the second or third week and we lost. Back in our crowded, noisy and indifferent locker room, I got up on the bench I shared with Greg E.

Let’s talk Turkey

Let’s talk Turkey Deep into Autumn, the season John Keats referred to as “the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,” the one thing on everyone’s mind is a bird. Yes, November is the month of the turkey.

School staff and creators of this program, Sara Knottski, long-time K/1 teacher, and Gayle Grinnell, paraprofessional and LPN, confidently led each of the eight weekly hikes exploring the wonderful area that we live in.
