Wildlife Matters

Wolf meets skunk James Egan’s dog-skunk encounter in his column of Oct 21, 2023 was very timely as my backyard trail camera had recently photographed a neighborhood wolf meeting a neighborhood skunk. He assumed (as had I when our dog got sprayed nearly 50 years ago) that the dog had approached the skunk from behind.

BEYOND REASON

A conversation with the Count Under a waning moon, atop a grassy hill, sits a large, run-down but operational asylum. There is a winding road that leads to an iron gate at the foot of the hill.

Lois Eyinck told all

Sponsored by Domestic Violence Prevention, long time Widjiwagan teacher, camp leader, and Grand Marais resident, Lois Eyinck, told stories of her life to a packed house at the Hub on October 11th. The YMCA camp on Burntside Lake was and is a huge part of her life.

Matters of Record

The Cook County News-Herald publishes Matters of Record to inform the public of arraignments and dispositions of criminal cases in which the punishment exceeds $150 and/or ten days in jail and/or includes one year of supervised adult probation. It is the Cook County News-Herald’s policy that this information contains a complete record. Requests for items to be withheld will not be granted.

Conservation Officer Tales

Although the Cook County News-Herald knows that the majority of sportsmen and women are law-abiding folks, there are a few that run afoul of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Officers. Periodically, the DNR provides a report of some of the miscreants the Conservation Officers (CO) have encountered. The News-Herald shares these stories as a reminder to all to be safe and to follow the rules!

North Shore Storm cross country teams win at the Proctor Lions Invitational

North Shore Strom cross country coach April Wahlstrom understated a wee bit when she noted that the 'Proctor meet went well.' The North Shore Storm (NSS) boys and girls varsity placed first and second in the Class A division, with the JV boys and girls finishing second, the junior high boys winning, and the junior high girls placing third. All in all, a great cross country meet! Varsity girls 5K Moose Lake/Willow River/Barnum won the girl's varsity team title with 139 points.
