Beaver are a keystone species; they have a major impact on their environment and are critical to maintaining that biological community. Unfortunately, beaver recovery was slowed by another war on beaver regarding stream trout management.
As the snowmobile riding season draws near, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reminds riders of important dates, safety tips and registration requirements. The current lack of snow cover means that Minnesota’s snowmobile trails will not be usable by the official opening date of Dec. 1. Several conditions must be met before trails are open, groomed and ready for travel:

There were winners for getting the most skips, having the farthest skips apart from each other, and skipping the largest rock.

Vikings boys’ head basketball Coach Keaton Riley and his assistant coaches Tia Parks and Will Sandstrom ran the kids through a spirited practice last Tuesday. 'We are building a culture here, and the kids are getting it,' Riley said.
Gunflint Hills Golf Course Superintendent Paul Jones reported that the 2023 golf season was the best he has seen in his five years managing the city-owned course. Jones issued his year-end report to the Rec Park Board at the meeting held on Tuesday, December 5.

2024 County Infrastructure Projects With the 2023 construction season wrapped up at the Highway Department, we have already been working on projects for the 2024 season. Projects are slated all throughout the county, from Tofte to the Gunflint Trail and up to Grand Portage.
