North shore swimmers on the Agate team representing Grand Marais, Silver Bay and Two Harbors completed an exciting week at the end of their season with their preliminary sectional meet on Thursday, November 9th and final meet on Saturday, November 11th.

ISD 166 special education teacher Melissa Oberg received a well-deserved honor last week when she was one of four teachers to receive an Educator of Excellence Award at the Minnesota Rural Education Association (MEA's) awards Banquet on Sunday, November 12, at Cragun's Resort in Brainerd.

Economic Assistance and Health Care programs update What is Economic Assistance? Economic assistance refers to any government-run program that assists low-income people with meeting basic needs such as food and shelter. Programs can provide eligible residents with a monthly benefit to purchase food, can be paid directly towards shelter expenses like rent or utilities or provide recipients with money to help them purchase other items of basic need.

The Cook County High School Shingobee Chapter of the National Honor Society held its induction ceremony last night, November 13, 2023, at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts. Five students were inducted as new members of the National Honor Society: Kyla Knapper, Jordan Backstrom, Grace Blomberg, Knut Remmem, and Lexi Surbaugh.

October went by in a blink. November is now a time to turn on the furnace, light some candles, and bake some warm bread in the oven. I love it when the house smells of cinnamon, spice, and everything nice. I did a variation on banana bread this year by adding pumpkin and extra spices to the recipe. I don’t know if I will return to my traditional banana bread recipe anytime soon. The nutmeg warmed not only the aroma of the bread, but I could feel it warming up my throat like a hug from the inside.

We were matriculated to the big, old high school for 9th grade, and our first 9th grade football game was the second or third week and we lost. Back in our crowded, noisy and indifferent locker room, I got up on the bench I shared with Greg E.

Birch Grove students and two school staff took on a total of 18 miles of Superior Hiking Trails throughout eight hikes in a new special edition afterschool program, Birch Buddies ~ HIKE! School staff and creators of this program, Sara Knottski, long-time K/1 teacher, and Gayle Grinnell, paraprofessional and LPN, confidently led each of the eight weekly hikes exploring the wonderful area that we live in. Hikers enjoyed observing the change of season from summer to fall to winter throughout the 8 weeks of specifically chosen hikes.
