At the next Garden Club meeting, Cook County Master Gardener Sally Berg will be speaking with us about how to create small pollinator gardens in our yards, also known as “Pocket Plantings.” We all know how important pollinators are and now we’ll have a chance to learn how we can invite them into our own growing spaces, even if that space is quite limited. Attendees will receive a short handout with pertinent information that they can take home and utilize in planning their own special spot for pollinators. With fall approaching, this is the perfect time to assess your yard and start making plans for next year! After our meeting, we are hoping to be able to tour a local garden which is located a short distance from the Memorial Rose Garden.

On September 13 the Happy Hikers will hike the Middle Falls Trail at Grand Portage State Park. The Middle Falls Trail is a rugged 4.5-mile round-trip hike. This challenging trail leads to a beautiful 20-foot waterfall. The trail passes over ridgetops, through heavily wooded forests and along the banks of the Pigeon River, with breathtaking views of the river gorge and Lake Superior. Allow three to four hours to fully appreciate the rugged beauty of this trail. We will have lunch after the hike back at the picnic area at the Visitor Center. Well-behaved dogs are welcome, on a leash.

We all want to be important to someone. Jim Manahan mattered to his clients, the legal profession, to Chilean people, and his family. Although not a perfect person, he was a good, talented, and interesting man. Why might we care about a Mankato attorney who died this year?
with a-half years ago in the spring. That's how I know the 'half ' year or so.
I don’t know exactly why cramming the entire population of Minnesota (5.7 million) into one fairground over a one-week period is a good thing, but people seem to clamor for the thing. Like an old friend, they even give it a nickname: The Great Minnesota Get Together. Look, you can call the event “Fred” for all I care but its official name is The Minnesota State Fair.
