1st & 2nd Thrift Store is open for business!

It took longer than expected but the good news is that the 1st & 2nd Thrift Store is open at its’ new location at 11 1st Ave West (the newly rehabbed Birchbark and Gifts building). The store had a “soft” opening on Saturday, July 22 and despite no advertising, business was brisk, said Anne Mershon.

Superior National Forest solicits campground concessionaires

On Monday, July 17, Thomas, Hall-Superior National Forest Supervisor announced the solicitation of proposals for campground concession Special Use Permit for numerous campgrounds and recreation areas on the Superior National Forest. Selected concessionaire permits issued would be for providing high-quality public services through operating and maintaining government- owned recreation facilities.

Conservation Officer Tales

Although the Cook County News-Herald knows that the majority of sportsmen and women are law-abiding folks, there are a few that run afoul of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Officers. Periodically, the DNR provides a report of some of the miscreants the Conservation Officers (CO) have encountered. The News-Herald shares these stories as a reminder to all to be safe and to follow the rules!

Walk to End Alzheimer’s will take place in September

Cook County will join more than 600 communities nationwide with two walks to end Alzheimer’s this coming September. The Grand Portage team will walk on Saturday, September 9 and the Grand Marais team will walk on Saturday, September 23, leaving the Hub/Senior Center at 2:30 p.m.

The Grand Marais Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at 5:15 p.m. in the City Council Chambers of City Hall to consider: 1. Grand Marais students need one tutor for extra support

Fewer than a third of students are achieving grade level-proficiency in reading and math With fewer than a third of Minnesota students achieving grade level-proficiency in literacy and math, one Math Corps tutor is being sought to serve in Grand Marais area schools and preschools beginning in August. “Those numbers seem really daunting, but the good news is we have a solution that works,” says Christine Fankhanel, Director of Minnesota Programs with Reading Corps, Math Corps and Early Learning Corps.
