Happy Hikers to hike the Centennial Trail

The Happy Hikers will travel 40 miles up the Gunflint Trail to the Kekekabic Trailhead where the Centennial Trail begins on July 26. We’ve tried to do this hike the last two years, but have had to cancel due to rain or fire in the area. Hopefully, third time’s a charm! This 3.3-mile interpretive loop follows a historic railroad bed. It is the site of the ill-fated Paulsen Mine. Hikers will be able to see the original mine test pits from the 1890’s. The Centennial Trail was developed to honor the Superior National Forest’s 100th anniversary in 2009. An interpretive guide to the 14 stops will be available. Wellbehaved dogs are welcome, on a leash.

Senior Legion baseball team beaten by Ely

The Cook County/Silver Bay Senior Legion baseball team has played a lot of baseball over the last few weeks, taking their share of wins and losses over that period. On July 15, following a stellar win over Aurora, the Vikings second game was played against Ely, and the results weren’t as good with the Vikings falling 7-1.

BEYOND REASON

The gift that keeps on giving July is red hot, filled to the brim with dinners on the patio, swimming, summer camps, mosquitos and, of course, tennis. But July is a unique month in that it is also the time we celebrate The Wife’s birthday.

Gunflint Trail RAISE Grant update

The Cook County Minnesota Highway Department announced an update on their solicitation for an IIJA Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) Grant for the Gunflint Trail Improvement Project. There were four projects selected in Minnesota and Cook County was not one of them. All told the Department of Transportation received $15 billion in requests but only had $2.26 billion available.
