Memorial Day Event to Honor Our Veterans

Each year on Memorial Day, our community gathers at the Cook County Courthouse to honor the service and sacrifice of the men and women who gave their lives in defense of our nation. The ceremony, which is held at 11:00 a.m., is a solemn and respectful event that brings together veterans, active service members, families, and community members to reflect on the meaning of the day. Our local American Legion and Auxiliary organizations lead the observance, including a color guard presentation, the playing of Taps, readings, and speeches that highlight the enduring legacy of those who served. The courthouse lawn becomes a place of remembrance and unity as a wreath is laid and the names of the fallen are read aloud, ensuring they are never forgotten.

COUNTY NAMES PART DEUX

A few weeks ago, we wrote about the origin of Minnesota Counties’ names. All 87 were listed with their county seat towns and their general location in our state. There was only room in the paper for a few counties. You can find that column, Wondering 61 Wherefrom Our County Names on the internet via https://www.cookcountynews-herald. com/. We also wrote there were many things worth analyzing. Today we have room for that.

Gunflint Trail Construction Stoplights

Cook County would like to address concerns about the Gunflint Trail bridge construction stoplights and how they may impact emergency vehicles. Delays at this intersection were discussed in detail by the Cook County Highway Department, Cook County Emergency Management and North Shore Health EMS during preconstruction, specifically the potential delay of an emergency vehicle. EMS crews were properly informed and educated about how to maneuver under these circumstances. All parties agreed that for safety purposes, the stoplights must be honored by all vehicles.
