Cook County Coalition of Lake Associations Gearing Up for Open Water Season

With the open water season just around the corner, the Cook County Coalition of Lake Associations is looking to engage lake, road, and property association members and others in a variety of hands-on projects that address water and shoreland quality this summer. One of the most important ways we can make a difference is through educating residents and visitors about what they can do to reduce degradation of the pristine environment in Cook County. Here are a few strategies we can all use to preserve and protect the waters, shorelands, and wildlife: Natural shorelands are the last barrier to runoff pollution and the best strategy for shoreline stabilization. Protect shorelines from erosion and enhance natural filtration of contaminants.

Upcoming softball and baseball games are played here

Because of a long, wet, snowy spring that caused Cook Counties ballfields to be unplayable, the boys' and girls' baseball and softball teams will be on the road making up for delayed games along with their regularly scheduled games for the next two weeks, except the girls’ softball team will play Mountain Iron-Buhl at home on Friday, May 9 at 4:30 p.m. The game will played at the Little League field. The next home game for the girls is Thursday, May 15, at the Little League field, and the game starts at 4:00 p.m.

April 2025 Lodging Tax Report

The April 2025 Lodging Tax Report from the Auditor’s Office for February 2025 collections. The Visit Cook County Income Study shows that February collections were up 31.0% over 2024 and Fiscal-Yearto- Date collections are up 3.2%. As compared to fiscal year 19-20, February collections are up 44.9%.

Gau to leave the Violence Prevention Center

After eight years, Lindsey Gau will leave her role as the Executive Director of the Violence Prevention Center on June 26. However, Gau isn't leaving the county. Instead, she has taken a job as a Behavioral Health Consultant at the Sawtooth Mountain Clinic.

Wherefrom Our County Names

Sometimes we get lucky. While reading in the whole volume of Minnesota Place Names from the Minnesota Historical Society for another column, I got intrigued by the various sources of the names of our counties. The original focus was the book, To Banish Forever, a history of the removal of the Ho-Chunk Winnebagos from the Mankato area. Now that I got excited about County names, that will be another column.
