The Story of Two Paintings: Unveiling the Mystery of local artist Anna Johnson’s “Woman with Sticks”

The Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery recently received an original painting by local artist Anna C. Johnson titled “Woman Hauling Sticks.” This donation, from the Johnson Trust with Leslie Carter as the previous owner, is notable not only for its artistic merit but also for its role in concluding a bigger story featuring a slightly different painting of the same name.

Work on the Spruce Creek Bridge Replacement is going well

Northland Constructors poured the deck for the Spruce Creek Bridge on Friday the 15th. The deck pour was completed the same day and it went very well. The next steps in the construction and completion of this project are back filling the abutments for the new bridge structure, some minor road work and the installation of the timber railings.

Pet of the Week

Do you like Candy? Of course you do. Candy is a loveable, playful, friendly, spicy gal of 11-12 weeks old. She was found in a wet ditch by a parking lot being bombarded by red wing blackbirds. Her foster family is really enjoying this little gal! She is up to date on her vaccinations, microchipped and wormed. She is NOT spayed yet but the adopter will get a $100 spay voucher to use at their vet and the adoption will be official after that. Adoption fee is $175 plus tax. For more information about Candy, call Mary at 218370-8461 or Dale at 218-370-9534.

Please return the speed limit to 20 mph on the Croftville Road

I spoke with Robbie Hass, the County Highway Engineer, when the 30 mph signs went up and he tried to explain this “people drive based on the nature of the roadway” logic. And, indeed, most people do drive under 30 mph on the Croftville Road. So why post a speed limit at all? And why give ANYONE the idea that 30 mph would be appropriate?

Praise for North Shore and Sawtooth Clinic Health Services

As summer residents in the back woods near Hovland for many decades, my family has needed medical attention from time to time. This summer we had to get more appointments than ever, including an MRI, visits to a nurse practitioner and sessions with a physical therapist. So far we have been very impressed with the quality and timeliness of the care we’ve gotten. Cook County residents should be proud of the friendly, attentive staff and the level of services here in Grand Marais. We are certainly grateful for your well-coordinated services.
