Gentlemen of the Woods, a book review

Willa Hammitt Brown has penned a captivating account of early loggers, their lifestyles, and their impacts on the towns and cities they frequented during their weekend visits. This scholarly work, which began as a modest ten-page summer essay titled 'Researcher at the Forest History Center in Grand Rapids, Minnesota,' underwent a remarkable evolution. It blossomed into a dissertation that 'served as the foundation of this book' during her tenure at the University of Virginia, a testament to her scholarly dedication and journey.

Girls bow out of the playoffs

The Cook County High girls varsity basketball team traveled to Mountain Iron-Buhl (MIB) to play in the Section 7A round of Minnesota high school playoffs.

Three Viking boys make All-Conference

A senior guard, Denali Blackwell, has led the Vikings in scoring for the last several years. This season, Denali averaged 20.7 points per game. He was second on the team in rebounding with an average of 6.8 boards per game, second in steals with a 1.8 game average, third in blocks with 0.7 per contest, first in free throw average with 78 percent of his free throws scoring, first in 3-point shot percentage with 37 percent of his tries finding the bottom of the net, and he is a tough defender. Denali, a senior guard, was named First Team All-Conference for his outstanding play over the last year.

Ezme Mundell takes on her first Kortelopet race

On February 21st, 2025, I took on my first 29km race. The American Birkebeiner happens annually in Cable, Wisconsin, and has several different events. Some include the Kortelopet (29km), the Birkebeiner (50km), skijoring races, kids races, and lots more. This was their impressive 51st year of holding the races. It was my first year of being able to do the Kortelopet race (you must be 13 years old), and I chose to skate ski.

Cook County Housing and Redevelopment Authority and Hamilton Habitat Joint Press Release

The Cook County HousingandRedevelopment Authority submitted a grant application to the Iron Range Resources & Rehabilitation board on behalf of Hamilton Habitat for the extension of utility infrastructure to two sites that have been acquired, cleared, and prepared for future construction of two single-family homes in Grand Marais. On Friday, February 21st , the IRRR announced the grant proposal among a list of housing and economic development projects that were later approved on Tuesday, February 25th at the special IRRR board meeting in Saint Paul.
