2025 John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon postponed to March 2 due to unsafe trail conditions

[Duluth, MN, January 2, 2025] – The Board of Directors of the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon has announced that the 2025 race will be postponed to March 2, 2025, due to unsafe trail conditions. Recent assessments revealed insufficient snow and icy terrain along the 300-mile course, creating hazardous conditions for sled dogs and mushers.

Nordic skiers perform well at early meets

Proctor Invite kicked off the Nordic ski racing season on December 10th at the Grand Avenue Nordic Center in Duluth. Over 270 skiers took on the challenging hills and turns with names like Carnage Corner. Our young team fared well in this first race of the season on man-made snow.

Winter Solstice Shadow Puppet Performance draws a nice crowd

The Good Harbor Hill Players annual winter solstice shadow puppet performance at the North House Folk School was well attended on Friday, December 20, as onlookers watched Whoo Shall I Say is Calling? This year’s shadow puppet play featured a nocturnal bird, an owl who hunts at night.

Boys win one, lose one in Ely Christmas tournament

The Cook County High School boys’ varsity basketball team traveled to Ely the day after Christmas to take part in the annual two day holiday tournament, and came home with mixed results.

Vikings’ girls basketball team loses to North Woods

On December 20, the North Woods Grizzlies were too much for the Cook County Vikings in a game played at North Woods. The game started with both teams showing great energy, but with 3:08 left in the first, the very aggressive Grizzly team had already committed ten fouls as they kept pulling away. The Vikings, a young team, fought hard but were unable to match the Grizzlies' pace, resulting in a 70-28 defeat.

Robert ‘Bob’ Hertzberg

Robert ('Bob') H. Hertzberg, 96, of Grand Portage, MN, died on December 5, 2024, from complications of an auto accident. Born in Stamford, CT to Marian Hastings Hertzberg and Dr: Reinhold F. Hertzberg, Bob grew up in Stamford and Rowayton, CT, with summers spent in Maine with his grandparents and brothers. He graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, NY. After serving in the Merchant Marines and U.S. Nary, he graduated with an MBA from St. Louis University.
