Conservation Officer Tales

Although the Cook County News-Herald knows that the majority of sportsmen and women are law-abiding folks, there are a few that run afoul of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Officers. Periodically, the DNR provides a report of some of the miscreants the Conservation Officers (CO) have encountered. The News-Herald shares these stories as a reminder to all to be safe and to follow the rules!

Bear hunters: remember to buy license, check regulations

Bear hunters who enter the lottery for bear hunting licenses should watch their mail to see if they were selected for a license, as the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has mailed postcards to lottery winners. Hunters can also look on the Minnesota DNR website to see if they were selected. The deadline to purchase a lottery bear license is Thursday, Aug. 1.

Some people say that they hate weeding. I'm all right with hating weeding. Some people come out and say they hate it, but then, when the quackgrass is up in the potatoes, when the vetch is climbing the roses, when the lamb's-quarters are in the tomatoes, the dandelions are in the strawberries, the plantain in the peppers, wild chamomile in the marigolds, that's when some of those same people are in there weeding.
