Tofte Community Gardens is growing strong

In the past year, the Tofte Community Gardens have blossomed from a dream to a tangible reality. Community members gathered to build 20 raised garden beds on land below the Birch Grove Community Center.

Arrowhead Cooperative’s Operation Round Up awards ten organizations’ grants

BRIAN LARSEN Birch Grove Community School will receive $2,810 through an Operation Round Up grant for Arrowhead Cooperative to help with the purchase of outdoor equipment. The school was one of ten local organizations that benefited from the $27,168 funds given this year through the spare change of members of Arrowhead Cooperative.

As I See It

Existing today in Cook County Minnesota are about 1) 3,000 second homes, 2) 350 licensed “vacation home rentals”, 3) 1,400 homesteads. Unfortunately, the county has long lacked adequate housing for workers and their families.

COUNTY CONNECTIONS

When parents and other primary caregivers are able to access affordable, high-quality childcare that fits their needs, it positively affects both the development of their child(ren) and their ability to participate in the workforce and economically support their family. Early childhood (0-5) is a unique period of foundational, rapid brain development; the impact of experiences in a person’s life during this period continues throughout the lifespan.

The Fisherman’s Picnic annual celebration of North Shore summer life is Aug. 1-4 this year, but it starts early with the best: food, of course! And the Cook County WISE group (Women’s Initiative for Service and Education) is ready to celebrate. In the Box (actually, a bag) A meal for one person costs $25 and includes: Lena’s Fishcakes, Birch Terrace Tartar Sauce, Homemade Spry Swedish meatballs with gravy and mashed potatoes, South of the Border Coleslaw, Dinner Roll, and Two Cookies.
