Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Each year, the residents of Cook County properly dispose of between 11 and 16 tons of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) each year. In converting that into pounds, it equates to between 22,000 and 32,000 pounds of HHW each year that is fortunately being kept out of not only the landfills, but also our lakes, rivers and streams.

Gordon Engstrom is the Tofte Citizen of the Year

Gordon Engstrom was named the 2024 Tofte Township Citizen of the Year at the July 4th celebration held in Tofte. Township Board Chair Craig Horak thanked Engstrom for stepping up to fill the township's treasurer position, a job that isn’t easy to fill.

High turnout for the July 4th Tofte Trek 10K Wilderness Run/Walk

BRIAN LARSEN A little mud—okay a lot of muddidn’t deter a large number of runners from participating the July 4th Tofte Trek races that started and ended at the Birch Grove Community Center. All told 117 runners finished the race, 74 men and 43 women with seven who couldn’t complete the race.

Minnesota DNR certifies 9 new record fish

After making changes to the record fish program, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has seen steady interest by anglers in documenting their largest catches, as evidenced by the nine new state record fish the Minnesota DNR has certified since March.

Chamber of Commerce releases the results of the International Workforce Survey

BRIAN LARSEN In response to the recent Cook County Chamber of Commerce International Workforce Survey, thirty- six business owners, representing a diverse range of industries, have provided valuable insights. This response, though not extensive, is significant as it provides a snapshot of the impact J-1 students have on fulfilling jobs that would otherwise go unfulfilled.

SUE HENNESSY The Grand Marais Playhouse will present two plays in repertory weekends from July 18 through August 11. The annual Summer Theater Festival will include a hilarious farce and a comic thriller.
