Water, water everywhere… In light of recent torrential rains, I’m focusing this column on water— facts, concerns, and actions. I measured 3 inches of rain at our house last Tuesday, and the West End got slammed.

International worker dinners begin

Now that the J-1 workers have arrived, local businesses are better staffed than they were before these young folks departed last fall. Two churches have teamed up to offer these students meals to say thank you and greet them, as they have often traveled from very far away to arrive here.

Legislative Leaders come to the North Shore

On Thursday, June 20, Senator Grant Hauschild and Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy visited several spots along the North Shore. Two of their four visits were here in Cook County.

Superior National Forest issues Emergency Closure Order from June Storm Damage

The Superior National Forest (SNF) has issued an Emergency Forest Closure Order 09-09-24-05, June Storm Restrictions - restricting occupancy and use in affected areas across the Forest – effective June 24, 2024, at 12:01 a.m. until terminated or June 24, 2026, whichever occurs first. Currently the SNF has 23 roads, 1 wilderness point of entry and no recreation sites included in Exhibit A - Restrictions List, to 09-09-024-05 Emergency Closure Order. Maps are available in Exhibits B (overview map) & C (east & west zone maps). This is an on-going weather event and Exhibits A, B & C will be updated periodically, public notice will be made as updates are posted. Ray Bonneville to perform at the ACA

KATE FITZGERALD The North Shore Music Association is excited to welcome Ray Bonneville back to the Arrowhead Center for the Arts on July 13. Known as “a song and groove man,” Bonneville has a style that has drawn comparisons to JJ Cale and Daniel Lanois.

Gunflint Trail repairs delayed due to wet conditions

Three spot repairs on the Gunflint Trail (CSAH 12) have been delayed due to ongoing wet conditions, the Cook County Highway Department announced today. “We were concerned about the impact of the ongoing rain on the durability of a road repair,” said Maintenance Superintendent Matt Nesheim.

Wildfire Mitigation, Safety and Preparedness

On Saturday, June 29, the Poplar Lake Area Association (PLAA) is sponsoring a workshop at the Schaap Community Center (7401 Gunflint Trail) as part of their annual meeting. The second half of their meeting, starting at 10:45 a.m., is open to the public.
