Cook County approved for Federal Disaster Relief

BRIAN LARSEN The recent flooding over the last two weeks here and across Minnesota has damaged many roads, roads, driveways, and private properties, so much so that the Governor of Minnesota sought federal disaster assistance. On Saturday, June 29, Governor Tim Walz announced that 22 counties— including Cook County—have been approved for a federal disaster declaration Management Agency (FEMA) for severe flooding.

Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Flag Raised on Isle Royale

On Wednesday, June 12, 2024, the flag of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa was flown high for the first time in Rock Harbor to an Honor Song and Flag Song sung by the Stone Bridge Singers (traditional Anishinaabe drum group from Grand Portage). The Gichi Onigaming flag was raised by Grand Portage Band member and Vietnam veteran, Duane ‘Butch’ Deschampe.

Happy Hikers update

On July 10 the Happy Hikers will meet at 270 OVERLOOK (TERMINUS OF SUPERIOR HIKING TRAIL). From the trailhead on Otter Lake Rd., the Happy Hikers will hike along the Superior Hiking Trail/Border Route Trail to the northern terminus of the Superior Hiking Trail and the 270 Degree Overlook, where you will see beautiful views of the Swamp River/ Pigeon River valleys and the Canadian border. We will have lunch at the overlook. Well-behaved dogs on a leash are welcome.

New Cook County Youth Mountain Bike Team forming

Brian and Melissa Gregg are starting a new mountain bike club/team for local kids. The team is going to have a student rider/parent information meeting on Thursday July 11th at 5:00 pm at North Point Youth Center.

Despite the rain, runners set records at the 2024 Grandma’s Marathon

BRIAN LARSEN On a cool, drizzly, windat- your-back day, many runners set personal bests (PBs) at the 48th running of Grandma's Marathon held on Saturday, June 22. There were 7,543 finishers- 4,386 men, 3,132 women, and 22 non-binary runners that completed the 26.2 mile Grandma's Marathon.
