Seasonal load restrictions on some of Cook County’s paved and gravel roads have ended, effective today, in accordance with Minnesota’s guidance for the North frost zone. Legal weight trucks are able to use these roads, unless otherwise posted, effective at 12:01 a.m.

Yay Spring! The time of year when gardeners emerge from their winter hibernation, energized with new ideas and ready to get outside and get planting! Perhaps you’d like to join us? We are a small, but dedicated, group of gardeners intent upon improving our own gardens, as well as contributing towards the beautification of our community. Perhaps you’ve seen the Memorial Rose Garden? That’s managed and maintained by the Grand Marais Garden Club! Maybe you’re looking forward to the bright burst of colorful blooms soon to appear in the town planters? Yes, that’s done by us! Have you been to the Annual Flower Show in July? Guess what? We do that too!

Grand Marais Lions donate to Minnesota Children’s Press and the Letteracy Deck program

At a recent meeting, the Grand Marais Lions Club donated $2,500.00 to the Minnesota Children's Press and the Letteracy Deck program, which Anne Brataas created and runs. Upon receiving the gift, Brataas said, 'The Lions are helping make the second year of the Letteracy Deck program possible by funding 50 percent of our free stamps—international mail included.

Tim Cochrane wins a 2024 Minnesota Book Award

Tim Cochrane’s latest Book, Making the Carry: The Lives of John and Tchi-Ki-Wis Linklater University of Minnesota Press) was named the winner of the Emilie Buchwald Award for Minnesota Nonfiction. The announcement came on Wednesday, May 8, from the Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library, who listed finalists in all nine categories for the 2024 Minnesota Book Awards.

On that day the City and its Park & Recreation Board will be celebrating the completion of Overlook Landing, located between North House and the Rec Park. You can see the handsome, open-air structure as you drive by on Highway 61. The design has an open roof, benches to sit, and artwork in the walls inspired by George Morrison, home-grown artist.

Before I highlight a few of the spring delicacies to fill your basket, I want to give a reminder about sustainable harvesting.

In search of wild ramps So many things can possess the boy blessed (or cursed) with an imagination, provided with (gratefully) great books on great shelves (including the old Encyclopaedia Britannica and Webster's dictionary), with libraries both public and scholastic, with gardens to work and watch, and fields and woods and ponds to wander around. The boy conjures up thoughts of the next habitat over - of hollows and back channels of great rivers, the homes to raccoon and mallards and swamp bucks.
