Roger MacDonald

The community is invited to the memorial service for Roger A. MacDonald, M.D. on Saturday, May 18 at 11:00 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Grand Marais, Minnesota. Roger was a family physician from 1948 to 1980s including 22 years in Cook County. When he retired from clinical practice, he moved to White Bear Lake and became associate director of Rural Physicians Associate Program, (RPAP) until the 1990’s. He returned to Grand Marais after retiring from teaching and embarked on a new career of writing. He chronicled three memoirs called the “Country Doc” stories which became published works.

Laura Turnquist

Laura Ann Quaife Turnquist, age 53, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 17th, 2024, in Bloomington, MN. She was born in Grand Marais, MN, to Stephen and Carole (Noyes) Quaife. She was a 1988 graduate of Cook County High School. Laura is survived by her parents; her brother, Thomas (Michelle) Quaife; son Andrew Turnquist; daughter Carlee (Ivan) Meyer; grandchildren, Beck and Beau Turnquist and Joslyn Meyer. She was preceded in death by her son, Alex Turnquist and her brother, Robert Quaife. Laura will be placed next to Alex at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Grand Marais, Minnesota. A graveside service will be held.

Delores Saethre

Delores Jean Saethre, age 92 of Grand Marais passed away on May 1, 2024, at North Shore Health Care Center. Born in Duluth, Minnesota, on July 1, 1931, to Ethel and Morse Rhea, Delores was the youngest of five sisters. Her childhood was spent at various Coast Guard stations around Lakes Michigan and Superior. Delores attended schools in multiple locations across Wisconsin and Michigan, including Two Rivers, Sheboygan, Neenah Menasha, Appleton, Green Bay, Holland, Munising, Marquette, Duluth, and Grand Marais. She once worked at the Split Rock Lighthouse Gift Shop while her father managed the lighthouse for the Coast Guard. During her senior year of high school, while employed at Joynes Department Store, Delores met Lyle Saethre. The couple married on December 30, 1946, and after an adventurous attempt to relocate to Alaska, which led them to Flagstaff, Arizona, due to a severe storm, they returned to Grand Marais. There, they settled on Maple Hill, raised six children, and shared 60 years of marriage.

Gordon Adams

Gordon (Gordy) T. Adams, age 94, of Hovland, Minnesota, died peacefully at North Shore Hospital, Grand Marais, on May 2, 2024. Formerly of Glenwood City, WI; Coon Rapids; Minneapolis; and Hanover. Gordon was the only child of Erhardt and Jeanette Roy Adams. He spent his early boyhood in Hanover, MN, and then moved to Minneapolis at age 9. He attended Ascension Catholic School in North Minneapolis through Grade 8, followed by Cretin-Durham Hall and Minneapolis North.

Paulette Anholm

Paulette Marie Anholm (nee Holm), age 75, formerly of Grand Marais, MN, died on Saturday, April 27, 2024 at the Avera Morningside Heights Care Center in Marshall, MN, following a valiant 3+ year battle with glioblastoma.

Hovland Townhall draws a big crowd to discuss local county road improvements

Last Thursday night, May 2, 51 people attended the Hovland Town Hall meeting to discuss road improvements to the Arrowhead Trail and Chicago Bay Road. Work isn't expected to begin until 2025, but folks had many questions about what would be done to improve the roads and possible changes to speed limits in at least one area.

Devil Track River will receive an Ojibwe name

Representatives from the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MNDOT) will unveil the new Devil Track River sign on Thursday, May 16, at 11 a.m. on Highway 61, about four miles east of Grand Marais, at the Devil Track River Bridge.
