Visit Cook County Hosts 'Destination Northern Ontario Best Practices Mission' Delegation to educate fellow tourism organizations on the optimization of tourism Visit Cook County, the official tourism authority for Cook County, Minnesota, hosted a delegation of tourism professionals from Northern Ontario for a knowledge-sharing program titled 'Destination Northern Ontario Best Practices Mission.' This initiative focused on fostering collaboration and discussing strategies for attracting visitors to both regions. 'An important part of optimizing tourism is teamwork,' stated Linda Jurek, Executive Director of Visit Cook County and the Cook County Chamber of Commerce.

Down Memory Lane

10 YEARS AGO APRIL 27, 2014 v The Grand Marais Planning Commission gave its approval to a preliminary plat for construction of “Grandview Lakeview”- a 24-unit development on the site of Gofer Cabins at the intersection of County Road 7 and Highway 61 east of Grand Marais. Todd Christiansen, who presented the plans, explained that the plat calls for 8.3 acres of property zoned C/1 and R/1 to be split into 24 residential lots intended for 12 twin homes, plus two commercial lots fronting the highway.

Silver Bay taconite plant pipeline ruptures

On Wednesday, April 17, a pipe carrying recycled water with some fluoride and miscellaneous substances, 'but nothing of concern or note,' according to Cleveland-Cliffs, broke, spilling as much as 140,000 gallons of water from the Silver Bay North Shore Mining facility, some of which reached Lake Superior.

Minnesota Historical Society honors George Morrison

This month, the Minnesota Historical Society honors the life and legacy of Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa artist George Morrison, who passed away in 2000. George was born in Chippewa City in 1919, about one mile east of Grand Marais.

Hacketts win Bob Pratt Memorial Cribbage tournament

BRIAN LARSEN The mother and son team of Rob and Carol Hackett lost only one game on their way to taking first place in the double-elimination Bob Pratt Memorial Cribbage tournament on Sunday, April 21. Thirty-two teams participated in the third annual afternoon tournament held at the Birch Terrace Supper Club.
