Don't Build a Justice Center I came here today to speak for many taxpayers who live in Cook County and oppose the proposed Justice Center. I am a sixth generation myself, and I and other locals born and raised here are a minority now.
Carolyn Dry, PH.D. Registered Architect, Emeritus Professor University of Illinois, Champaign Illinois, President, Design by Natural Processes, Inc. spoke to the county commissioners on Tuesday, and her remarks centered on the Grand Marais Community Orchard located at the Law Enforcement Center that would be taken away if the Justice Center is built. Dry, a lifelong architect and college teacher (one of the schools she taught at was MIT), said after she had spoken to the commissioners that the first thing an architectural firm does before drawing any plans is to talk to the stakeholders involved in the project. She said no one reached out to the people who built the orchard. Here are her remarks to the commissioners.
Hamilton Habitat would like to say … we support Jane Penner in her plan to build 'affordable housing'. This woman is willing to do this project with her own money. Hamilton Habitat operates strictly off of donations (which we are forever grateful for). That being said, this woman is a blessing and her wanting to give back to this community is wonderful. We should all support this project as well as her representative Kim Wolf of Timber Wolf Realty. Kim is working on this project as a volunteer, bringing her knowledge of real estate and much more to assist this project in being a success. Hamilton Habitat currently has 18 people on our list. We can only build 2 homes per year. You do the math. This is great, thank you, thank you, thank you Jane and Kim!
What is the sense of having a wonderful parking lot and trail access and having it closed six months of the year? We complained last fall about hikers parking on the highway. It’s not a safe spot! At times, five cars were parked on that curve.
BRIAN LARSEN After meeting with the architects and consultants from the BKV Group for more than three hours, who displayed two concepts for a proposed Justice Center and improvements to the Cook County Law Enforcement Center, the Cook County commissioners passed a motion 3-2 to accept the preliminary site and floor plan for the Cook County Law Enforcement Center. Commissioner Dave Mills motioned, Commissioner Ginny Storlie seconded, and board chair Ann Sullivan joined them in voting to move forward.
