A recent tragedy this past summer served as the impetus that will benefit the local Search and Rescue (SAR) department, the Emergency Medical System (EMS) and our local guests and residents. In 2023, numerous water fatalities plagued the Arrowhead region, three of them in Cook County.

Cook County YMCA and Minnesota Children’s Press Connect with Oshki Ogimaag Students

In a remarkable collaboration, the Grand Maraisbased Cook County YMCA and Minnesota Children’s Press teamed up with Oshki Ogimaag Anishinaabe Culture and Language Charter School to bring instruction in swimming and water safety — along with writing, drawing and book production — to 19 elementary school students of the Grand Portage band of Ojibwe.

Conservation Officer Tales

Although the Cook County News-Herald knows that the majority of sportsmen and women are law-abiding folks, there are a few that run afoul of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Officers. Periodically, the DNR provides a report of some of the miscreants the Conservation Officers (CO) have encountered. So What is Truth? In this era of social media and misinformation, how can we possibly know what to believe? Last winter our community hosted a group of international journalists with the World Press Institute, and one of them, believe it or not, worked for the BBC as a “Disinformation Specialist.” What??? What is this world coming to? It’s interesting to note that there’s a difference between Misinformation and Disinformation. Misinformation is defined as inaccuracies that stem from inadvertent error, sort of like gossip based on a truth.
