First & Second Thrift Store annual payout party pays dividends to grateful area non-profits

Johnson Heritage Post was a busy, happy place last Tuesday, January 30, in the late afternoon as Ann Mershon presented checks totaling $117,389 to 33 Cook County non-profits. A generous donor gave the group $35,000 to cover the costs of the seven months they were closed during the transition into their new location in the heart of Grand Marais at 11 First Avenue West, Mershon said.

Down Memory Lane

10 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 1, 2014 v On Thursday, January 23, 2014, the school board picked two architects to interview to see who will be selected to design a new industrial arts complex for the school. The estimated cost to build the 2,500 foot addition into the existing space is $750,000 with $200,000 of that dedicated to purchasing new equipment and $450,000 dedicated to construction.

Love the Hub Chili Feed Fundraiser

If you are a fan of chili and would like to help a good cause, please mark your calendar for Saturday, Feb 10th, for a chili feed at the Hub-10 North Broadway, Grand Marais. Several varieties of chili will be available: Beef chili, white chili, and vegetarian chili.

Community Center ice rinks closed

The ice rinks at the Community Center were closed on January 29 until further notice due to the unseasonable warm weather. “We hope to reopen as soon as temperatures drop and we can fix up the ice,” said community center staff.
