Local author publishes Chasing the North Wind

Skyport airport is gone today, just a long, flat, straight patch of weeds and grass and ghosts of airplanes, but at one time, it was a hub of activity. It was the airport for Grand Marais and the surrounding area. An airport started by Clarence Krotz, a World War Two pilot with 73 missions over two tours of duty who saw action in Sardinia, Italy, North Africa, and the European Theater. Clarence was nearly killed on his last mission when a cannon shell blew through the nose of his B-26 Lockheed Martin Marauder, killing his co-pilot. He was discharged in 1945 at age 25 with a fist full of military medals and moved from his Chicago home to Cook County, purchasing the 77-acre Bent's Resort on Devil Track Lake for $8,000. However, the County informed him of a surveying error that meant he had purchased land along Devil's Track Lake. If he wanted the land to build an airstrip, he would have to pay the County another $8,000, a hefty sum that required a bank loan.
