It looks like it will be next spring before shovels will be in the ground for the 51 apartments being built by Switchback Village, LLC in Grand Marais. Bids were opened and tabled for further review on July 28 for Phase 1 of the project located on 5th Avenue West in Creechville on about 12 acres of land sold to the developers for $1 by the City of Grand Marais.
Castle Danger Brewery of Two Harbors graciously hosted the well-attended MPR Rural Voice forum on Affordable Housing in Minnesota, expertly moderated by Kerri Miller. Audience participation was great, and a number of problems and solutions related to our affordable housing crisis were discussed. However, one important element was not addressed; affordability and accessibility of homes also depends on their annual energy costs.
Minnesotans who receive tax credits through MNsure will spend 5% less on health insurance premiums next year, on average Starting November 1, Minnesotans who need health insurance can sign up for 2024 coverage through MNsure, Minnesota’s official health insurance marketplace, where they can easily find, choose and purchase health insurance. MNsure’s open enrollment period begins November 1, 2023, and will run through January 15, 2024.

Construction workers were busy last Monday getting the ground ready for concrete to be poured for sidewalks that will be installed on the 5th Avenue West (old Gunflint Trail) reconstruction project. The Ulland Brothers have completed the roadway’s subcut and are finalizing the road base grade. All of the water and sanitary sewer utility work has been completed and the project is on track to be substantially finished sometime this October. Weather providing, of course.
20 YEARS AGO OCTOBER 3, 2003 v There’s no doubt about it – lynx are back. Five have been trapped and radio-collared in the Superior National Forest since a telemetry research project by the Natural Resources Research Institute began in February.
It has been a busy spring and summer at Arrowhead Animal Rescue! In total, Arrowhead Animal Rescue of Cook County is currently fostering ten adult cats, ten kittens, and two dogs across multiple foster homes. To provide an opportunity for community members to meet these adoptable animals, AAR is hosting an Adoption Event on Saturday, October 14th from 11a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hub. In addition to the animals AAR is currently fostering, we anticipate that several additional cats and kittens will join us at the event, all of which are in need of safe and loving homes. All in all, there is an abundance of local rescued animals available for adoption!
