Lloyd K. Johnson Foundation Grant to support long distance students and student services

Cook County Higher Education (CCHE) received a $70,000 grant from the Lloyd K. Johnson Foundation for the 2023-24 academic year. The grant is comprised of two components: a $40,000 grant for tuition scholarships for Cook County residents enrolled in long distance educational programs and a $30,000 grant to support CCHE’s student support services.

NSSRC nearing its fundraising goal for new Pincushion ski grooming equipment

“Thisisaonce-in-a-generation investment in our community and the future of Nordic skiing on the trails at Pincushion,” said Chris O’Brien, President of the North Superior Ski and Run Club (NSSRC) and one of the eight Pincushion Groomer Capital Campaign volunteers working to raise the funds needed for a new Pisten Bully groomer for Pincushion. “The current groomer is 35 years old. It has served us for many decades, but it is failing, breaking down frequently and struggling to climb and groom the hilly terrain at Pincushion.”

Skraba and Hauschild honored by Minnesota League of Cities

The League of Minnesota Cities has recognized 35 state lawmakers, including Rep. Roger Skraba (R-Ely), and Sen. Grant Hauschild (D-Ely) as 2023 Legislators of Distinction. Chosen legislators are honored for specific actions that aided efforts of Minnesota cities during the past year’s state legislative session.

Body of canoeist discovered in Brule Lake Area

The Cook County Sheriff ’s Office was notified on August 14, 2023, of a body discovered in the Brule Lake area of the BWCA. The body was discovered by other canoeists who notified authorities of the location. Cook County Sheriff ’s Office deputies, USFS Law Enforcement staff, and Cook County Search & Rescue responded and identified the deceased as Justin Sperl, 32, of Marshall Minnesota.

International Pickleball tourney to be held in Grand Marais
