

Body of canoeist discovered in Brule Lake Area
The Cook County Sheriff ’s Office was notified on August 14, 2023, of a body discovered in the Brule Lake area of the BWCA. The body was discovered by other canoeists who notified authorities of the location. Cook County Sheriff ’s Office deputies, USFS Law Enforcement staff, and Cook County Search & Rescue responded and identified the deceased as Justin Sperl, 32, of Marshall Minnesota.

Cook County Community Health Assessment and Improvement Plan is undergoing an update
Every five years, the Community Health Assessment (CHA) and Community Health Improvement Planning (CHIP) require local public health agencies under the Minnesota State Statute to complete a plan. Cook County completed a draft of its 20232028 CHA and hosted a June meeting to gather community feedback on the report.

International Pickleball tourney to be held in Grand Marais
Thunder Bay Pickleball Club and Grand Marais Pickleball Club are excited to announce the second annual international pickleball tournament and recreational play day for players from the North Shore (Duluth - Thunder Bay). The six pickleball courts have applied new acrylic and are ready for tournament play!

Senior Legion CC/SB beats alumni
The annual Fisherman’s Picnic alumni baseball game was a back-and-forth affair with the “kids” beating the alumni 12-11. Hunter Gomez had four hits and three RBIs to lead the way for the Sr Legion team.
