2023 results of the Tofte Trek 10K Wilderness Run

Dave Duede of Eagan, Minnesota, won the Tofte Trek 10K on Tuesday, July 4th, in 38:33, averaging 6:12 per mile on the hilly, somewhat swampy (in places) trails. Not far behind was Joey Chmelik of Grand Marais.

CC/SB Jr Legion team falls to Ely

The Cook County/ Silver Bay Jr Legion team was held to five hits and one run in their 9-1 Tuesday, June 27 loss to Ely. The Vikings lone run came in the third inning while Ely put two on the board in the first, one run in the second, two more in the fourth, one in the sixth and three in the seventh.

Time to nominate Citizen of the Year Candidates

The Grand Marais Lions Club is soliciting nominations for Citizen of the Year to be awarded on Saturday, August 5, 2023, during Fisherman’s Picnic. The Citizen of the Year award is for an individual or couple whose volunteerism and service to the community has made Cook County a better place to live.

Fire destroyed

Fire destroyed a house on 230 Devil Track Road last Saturday, July 1. Dispatch at the Cook County Law Enforcement Center was notified at approximately 11 p.m. that a house was fully engulfed in flames. Calls went out to the Maple Hill and Grand Marais fire departments who responded quickly but the house was too far gone to save.

Terry L. Cave

Terry L. Cave, age 74, went home peacefully to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on June 25th, 2023 surrounded by his loving family.

Roger Warren Strand

Dr. Roger Warren Strand passed away peacefully, on Tuesday June 6th, at Bethesda North Pointe, New London, Minnesota. Roger was born in St. Paul, Minnesota March 23rd, 1936, and raised in Minneapolis. He spent summers at(in) Green Lake in Kandiyohi County. Roger graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1953 and was inducted into the Roosevelt Alumni Hall of Fame in 2022. He graduated from Macalester College in 1957, and was awarded a Distinguished Alumni Citation. After graduating from the University of Minnesota Medical School with an MD, he served his compulsory military service on the Rocky Boy Reservation in Montana as a medical doctor with the US Army. He continued his medical education at the University of Minnesota, becoming a surgeon, and later at Kleiner Kutz Hand Care Center in Louisville, Kentucky, receiving specialized training in hand surgery. Roger Allen MacDonald passed away at the age of 99 at the Care Center in Grand Marais, Minnesota on June 21, 2023. He lived a full life serving as a family physician in Koochiching County, Minnesota from 1948-1962 and in Cook County, Minnesota from 1962-1978, as well as a brief stint in St. Peter, Minnesota with his brother- in-law, Dr. Robert
