Conservation Officer Tales

Although the Cook County News-Herald knows that the majority of sportsmen and women are law-abiding folks, there are a few that run afoul of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Officers. Periodically, the DNR provides a report of some of the miscreants the Conservation Officers (CO) have encountered. The News-Herald shares these stories as a reminder to all to be safe and to follow the rules!

Brea Boomer, a local resident from Grand Portage, was among the finishers of the Garry Bjorklund half marathon held in Duluth on June 21. At 32, she completed the 13.1-mile race in 1:59:12, maintaining a 9:06-mile pace. Her impressive performance placed her at 2,373 out of 8,249 finishers and 973 out of 4,917 women runners.

Highlights from the North House Folk School Wooden Boat Show and Summer Solstice Puppet Pageant

The North House Wooden Boat Show and Summer Solstice Puppet Pageant were once again a big hit with locals and visitors to our area. Bright sunshine on both Friday and Saturday meant the North House campus was busy with hundreds of people participating in free Try-It fiber projects, such as weaving and spinning, a wood-fired bread flatbread area, and an all-kids cabin building project.

Vehicle crashes lead to injuries

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, there was a one-vehicle accident south of Grand Portage on Highway 61 on June 22, with the driver suffering non-life-threatening injuries.
